With all the darkness brought by terror to Paris recently, it is timely that a show displaying a collaboration with French furniture maker Nicolas Aubergnac opens on 2nd December at Galerie Chevalier, Paris. Entitled ‘Materials and Motifs’, the show will display the ‘Nur’ or Light lamps. Made out of rare and precious woods, light shines through the square Kufic text and unique wood grain patterns creating imaginary landscapes. The show ends 29 January 2016.

Open Studio - Short course: The Art of Ottoman Illumination with Dr. Gulnihal Kupeli

This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of Istanbul’s finest illuminators. Assistant Professor at the University of Mamara, Dr. Kupeli will take you through some basic motifs used in this traditional book art before going on to complete your very own piece of tezhib.

Eid Festival 2015 on Trafalgar Square

Join Art of the Pen for a drop-in workshop at the Mayor’s Eid Festival in the Qatar Embassy Marquee.

Everyone is invited to come and celebrate Eid on Trafalgar Square on Saturday 25 July.

Highlights include a food festival where you can sample a host of delicious cuisines from across the world. Expect Malaysian, Turkish, South Asian, Egyptian, Lebanese, Indonesian, and Arabic. And that's just to name a few!

Open Studio - Talk: I Am the Pen in Your Hands by Bilal Badat

Bilal Badat is undertaking a doctoral degree at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and is a student of master calligrapher Efdaluddin Kiliç. His lecture will provide an insight into the unique master- apprenticeship relationship that continues to exist today in the study and practice of Islamic calligraphy in Turkey. He will share his research on some of the technical and spiritual processes involved in the transmission of calligraphy over time and how this can contribute to our understanding of aesthetics in the Ottoman tradition.

There will also be an opportunity for questions and answers. Doors open at 6pm for 6.30pm start.

Eye of the Beholder: Taking Inspiration

Where: Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Lister Park, Bradford, BD9 4NS

To mark the 25th anniversary of collecting, this exhibition showcases four new art commissions created by artists and practitioners chosen for excellence in their field, who work in a medium or theme complimentary to the International Art collection. Soraya Syed took inspiration from a pen case in the museum's collection and created a ground breaking holographic installation called ‘The Pen and the Sword’.
